How it works

Read it in three steps

  1. Open Tova, point the camera at the menu, and tap the shutter to translate.
  2. Tova reads each dish in English and shows real Hanyu Pinyin above every character, with tap-to-listen audio.
  3. Save the dishes you like to Favourites so you can show them to the waiter or reorder next time.
Common questions

About this guide

Can I translate a Chinese menu without internet?

Yes. Tova falls back to on-device neural translation when there's no connection, so it keeps working in restaurants with no Wi-Fi and inside mainland China without a VPN. The camera text recognition and per-character pinyin run entirely on your phone.

Does it show pinyin so I can pronounce the dish?

After you capture, Tova shows authentic Hanyu Pinyin above each Mandarin character, and you can tap any translation to hear it spoken aloud — so you can order out loud, not just point.

Is it free?

Tova is free to download with camera translation, voice, and 118 languages included. Pro adds extras like three-way Boardroom mode and saved-phrase tools, but reading a menu costs nothing.
